my family and I use the seafront every week. It is a part of our daily lives, always has been and SHOULD always remain so!
Heidi HesselingSigned on: Sat 19 Jan 2008 14:27:02 UTC
I support the petition to stop development on the promenade, and keep open spaces for public use.
Tamsin FaragherSigned on: Sat 19 Jan 2008 14:25:09 UTC
The city\'s open space and access to it keeps the Mother City\'s citizens the coolest and sanest in South Africa.
Ruth solomonSigned on: Sat 19 Jan 2008 13:29:58 UTC
Please leave this space public, for the people.
Andreas SchaalSigned on: Sat 19 Jan 2008 13:29:24 UTC
We go jogging there with our dogs quite regularly and it is always such a cool vibe. This is a place for ALL and all feel at peace there. It would be a utter disaster and big loss for our city, should this construction go through.
Emmylou RabeSigned on: Sat 19 Jan 2008 13:04:27 UTC
This part of our seafront is truly one of the public spaces in South Africa that is used by all. There are so few, let us fight hard to at least keep those that are already being used, and used extensively! We need to keep spaces that everyone can use... privatisation does exaclty the opposite... back to the best for a few privileged. Seafront for ALL.. it is already, lets keep it that way!

SHOCKING to even consider allowing commercial creep into an all too rare green space belonging to the public

Under no circumstances should this development be allowed. I have been a very supportive member of the DA Council in Cape Town since Helen Zille became the DA leader. Nevertheless, I feel so strongly about this issue, that if this development is allowed to happen I will never again vote for the DA.

Big Bay is a disgraceful ruinous, uncaring, greedy ruination of our western cape coastline!! This one will be the next. Being nearer the city centre may make it even more so.

Without a public space you can not harness and witness the free and organic socialising between residents of a suburb. The nature of Seapoint living is predominantly living in high density developments. Where do you go to stretch your legs and have a breath of fresh air if not in public spaces? In another shopping complex? NO ! Definitely NOT ! We all need a space where you can go for a walk or meet up with someone (for free !!) without having to buy a coffee because you feel guilty of standing outside someone\'s cafe or even worst, shopfront. This is OUR space ! All of ours !! Rather take a leaf from the European way of doing things than the American way with their shopping malls. It\'s over. The time for that approach is long over. There is a different socialising culture taking place in the world and if we lose this promenade it will be missing the boat all together. Locals DO NOT need additioanl shopping space (at this location) and the visitors certainly DO NOT need this shopping space so you have to question who stand to gain from this development. The soul of this community?, the visitors that come from all over the world to walk around and witness the sights and sounds of Cape Town? No, none of them. People with selfish and short sighted agendas stand to gain from this. The long term effects from keeping this a public space will be far greater than this short term approach of cashing in. That is ofcourse if the hart of this comminity is considered. This space is not functioning at it\'s full potential yet, and you should rather look at ways of making it more accessible for live performers to entertain or allowing space for a small market on certian days of the week. Be creative and responsible, not greedy and shortsighted. You will be held accountable !

we\'ve got more than enough shopping malls, and hardly any public spaces left.

Sea Point pool is my harbour, very few places in the world fill me with such intense enjoyment and inner peace. DONT LET ANYONE TOUCH THAT PLACE

I am disgusted with whoever is even considering this.
Couldn\'t we rather have a golf estate?!?
Heather ParrSigned on: Sat 19 Jan 2008 07:59:10 UTC
I am shocked that there is even consideration for such an abhorrant idea!
Keely WoodwardSigned on: Sat 19 Jan 2008 07:36:12 UTC
I\'m totally disgraced by this. It\'s an area where I have spent many lazy afternoons lying on the grass with my friends and going for jogs along the front. It\'s an area where all ages all races can enjoy.

    Sven Steen-NielssenSigned on: Sat 19 Jan 2008 07:24:58 UTC
    Keep the Cape Natural !

Developers should focus on building houses for the disadvantaged rather than wasting our beautiful coast line to fill their pockets.

    Disgusted!

Restricting public access and developing the Sea Point promenade would be disastrous. This location has been enjoyed by Cape Tonians for years as a fairly safe place to excercise and enjoy the view. It would be incredibly corrupt to allow a few selfish individuals to profit from this location while millions of others lose a prime piece of public space.

i love the seapoint beachfront, and feel it deserves to be enjoyed by everyone!
Zayd MintySigned on: Sat 19 Jan 2008 00:09:02 UTC
I use the seapoint promenade regularly and it is used by many of my friends and peers. It is the only truly democratic space in Cape Town and it would be a travesty if the proposed development goes ahead. Why should a small minority gain over the vast number of regular users

Our last bit of park land. Don\'t take it away from us.

We have very few open spaces left in Cape Town and South African cities. Please save this place. Thank you.
Garry NaderSigned on: Fri 18 Jan 2008 21:33:00 UTC
Future generatons will not absolve us from the folly of rezoning and developing this very special space. It must be preserved as public open space at all costs, even if this means taking the matter to court.
EF and LD SolomonSigned on: Fri 18 Jan 2008 21:28:11 UTC
Although we do not live in Sea Point it is one of our favourite places to take the children for a sea-front stroll and also a good place to get in a good healthy power walk on an even surface

Mandy RitchieSigned on: Fri 18 Jan 2008 20:52:37 UTC
Are they completely insane? This might mean income for a few, but a major loss for many, many more. Please don\'t let them develop this area.
Dale McKnightSigned on: Fri 18 Jan 2008 20:29:34 UTC
For whose benefit would this development be? Certainly not for the public of Cape Town who utilise this area every day for recreation and to enjoy the beauty of the seaboard. This proposed development is totally unacceptable. Keep unscrupulous, greedy developers and their cronies out of our public spaces - there has been enough destuction of this city by such people.
